segmentation within scheduling

Sometimes non-commercial channels like the BBC do not have the space bertween shows like commercial channeling so they would provide idents to add time. These include things such like:

  •  Information Providing
  • Variety of programing
  • Fill time
  • Provide break for live broadcasting

Scheduling

An ident is seriously important when it comes down to keeping a channels sceldue organised. An ident is an ideal opportunity to provide the audience with important information about the types of shows that are shown on that channel. the information provided by the ident would convince the viewer to keep watching the channel rather than switching over. a type of method used by broadcasters called stacking. This is when two of the same shows are on after each other and the channel advertises them at the same time. An example of this is when Film 4 advertise two films on after each other.

Packaging and Re-packaging

Re-packaging is when a TV channel rebrands themselves to become more popular. An example of when a TV Channel done this is BBC and them adding a new category to their ethos and this was cultural diversity so in order to help this they rebranded their idents, the new ones include

  • A mixture of people from different races and ages
  • A wheelchair Basketball team

Marketing

Marketing is simular to branding but marketing is sharing a company message and its goods. An example of this from TV is E4's eefer as this is a clever way of marketing The Big Bang Theory with its Sci-fi orgins. another example is ITV2 using its popular show Love island in its ident before the show starts. This is useful because it advertises both Love Island and ITV2.

Branding

Branding is often confused as just a visual experience however, this is not true. A brand is when a company or business advertise themselves in order to stick out and become memorable, they will keep reusing a certain thing to make their target audience recognize them. An example of this is McDonald's and there slogan: "im loving it." In terms or TV however a channel may incorporate a popular show on their channel. For example Chanel 4 have an ident where Homer Simpson tries to get a pack of beers from some electrical wire and when he sips from the can he keeps electrocuting himself and in doing this he creating the Channel 4 logo from the black outs

Identity

Identity is important for a TV channel as this is the main way that they will be recognized, However, with the constant changing in the media, a channel is constantly updating their identity. A TV Channel will update their identity in order to become relevant or up to date with modern times. An example of this is when BBC change their TV ident. The BBC gave their iconic circle an modern revamp with the likes of hippos swimming in a circle. This was apart of a campaign to revamp the BBC brand. This new identity was first introduced in 2006, in a interview Peter Fincham (Controller for BBC One) stated that "In an increasingly competitive marketplace a channel needs to stand out from the crowd and I believe our new identity is just what's needed for BBC One.

Design Led

some idents are purely entertainment value such as the ITV ident with the dog as in this it shows a dog being cleaned it offers no relevance. The reason why itv can do this is because they are a commercial channel and they rely on advertsing for their money so they need to be more entertaining.
